Week 13, Building Family in a Hostile Environment:

As I have said previously, our emphasis in these final weeks of this course is working on the Theology of the Family project.  Here is the brief input for this week.
Watch this video by Chip Ingram.  Take notes as you watch.  Send me a copy of your notes.  I'll get back to you with my comments.

Week 14, Sexual Purity: Does Anybody Do That Anymore?

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about week 13.  I'll be posting material for it soon.  If you remember, however, I mentioned back in the seventh lecture of our classroom sessions that we would be treating that session and this weeks material kind of like "dinner, and then the leftovers."   So, open the refrigerator door and take advantage of Dinner the Sequel.

There are probably more "leftovers" here than you can consume in several meals.  Scan, read some.  Hold onto this.  It is useful material.  You will likely find some material that will be helpful in your big project.

Family Life Thought #4:

We have two sessions planned on the subject of sexual purity, one during
the lecture/discussion series this month, and one in the online section later in the course.  In working on those, I came across this article.  The thinking parallels some stuff I have found helpful in the past.

I post it here for class members and also--especially--for unmarried young adults and parents of teens.

Marriage advice worth considering, Family Life Thought #3:

Family Life Thought #3:

An older internet friend of mine, Charles Wood, quotes a younger guy, Dave Willis, whom I haven't met.  The original article is titled "The Best Marriage Advice Ever," a bit hyperbolic, but still good

News Release:

Alii, friends in Palau,
Lord willing, I'll be in Palau October 17-29. I should be at the Palau TF, on PCC campus most mornings. The number there is 680-488-4294. You can reach me by email at hmerrell@piu.edu. I'll have information about Spring classes at PIU-Palau and application materials for both PIU-Palau and our Guam campus. I'll be doing the lecture portion of the Marriage and Family Class. The Lectures are on the Biblical Foundation of the Family. I've been given permission to invite leaders from the churches to attend these lectures. If you want to attend, check with Pastor Hiob at Koror Evangelical Church, or write me. The lectures will be Monday-Friday both weeks, at 5:10. The location will be announced, based on the expected attendance.
I can tell you now, that one class that will be offered at PIU-Palau this spring is THEO 200. To take this class students must be enrolled in PIU, or take the class, with adviser permission, as a student at PCC. A scholarship is available for first time students who do not qualify for other financial aid. This class is very useful in ministry, and provides a foundation for further study. You can find application materials at piu.edu, or see me when I am in Palau.
I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Family Life, Thought #2:

Family life is not always easy, sometimes in it incredibly hard.  Coach Monty Williams reminds that God is enough.

What I Learned In The Locker Room:

This article tells about a valuable lesson, about cherishing the one you love, I learned back when I was in High School.  I'll refer to this in the section on Mate Selection, Week 5, but you can get a head start on it, now.

Why would You Cast Those Pearls Before Those Hogs?

I'm teaching a Marriage and Family class at Pacific Islands University.  Part of what we are working on is getting started well--mate selection.  I've been spending a great deal of time with my past. I'm using the story of how Kathy and I got together

Week 4, Part B:

Week #4, Part B:

I’ve edited a recording of a message I did at Covington Bible Church, a couple of years ago.  I’ll present it here in several sections.  In between the sections there are some things for you to think about.

God created man in His own image . . . male and female He created them.  God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply. . . . God saw all that He had made,
and behold, it was very good. . . . A man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord.”  [Along the way sin entered the picture.  Doing family in this sinful world can be] “. . . great tribulation, [or]
. . . happiness . . . rejoic[ing, and God’s] reward. (Genesis 1:27-28, 31, 2:24-25, 4:1, Matthew 24:21, Deuteronomy 24:5, Proverbs 5:18)
This class will help us, and help us help others, to make it the latter.
